was founded in 2002 by five ex pupils as a way of giving something back
to society for the affluent lives they had led. The founding members
were Shane Comer, Fergus Joyce, Aidan Murphy, Donal Murphy
& RW. The founding five decided to take less fortunate
people out of their miserable lives for just one day over Christmas
to show them how good life could actually be. The five got to work
on the idea immediately. They knew they needed financial backing
and luckily it was found in the shape of the philanthropist businessman
“The Big Show”. “The Big Show” very generously provided financing for
a day out in the Irish Open venue Druids Glen Golf and Country Club.
Now, it was time to find someone who needed that break from reality.
They needed someone so destitute and lonely that one day outside
his miserable existence might change his life forever. And so the hunt
for a suitor began. College annuals from as far back as the 1970’s
were trawled through for many weeks but one name kept coming to
the forefront, Donal “The Double” Dunlop. Double was a young lad
with lots of ability but he always had trouble trying to overcome his
publicly schooled Childhood. Aidan Murphy was the chief proposer
as he could relate with Donal’s publicly schooled upbringing as
he himself had the same unfortunate start to life but had seen
the errors of his ways and righted his wrongs. All that was needed
was a date and what better than the 23rd of December, it would
be a celebration of the birth of Shane “Golfy” Comer.
And so the Christmas Invitational was born...
